Squall Emeralds
One in ten Vermorian whales comes equipped with a Squall Emerald. These are magical stones that allow the whales to glide above the waves, sometimes soaring right over the Island of Vermire itself.
The whalers of Vermire hunt for these crystals, which are then affixed to the helms of their ships. They allow Vermire's boats to lift off the water and into the docks and harbors of more elevated islands.
Squall Emeralds are generally considered powerful magical implements and an entire industry has formed around their sale and use. They are also used in abundance in the creation of powered firearms, which are sold to other islands as needed.
Dock's Disease
An illness that goes by many names but is exclusive to the Isle's inhabitants. It is most often seen in whale hunters and those who live in the Lower Docks. If local myth is to be believed, the illness is the ocean's revenge for Vermire's extortion of its resources.
The illness can affect people at birth with parental exposure, often causing malformed limbs. In adults, it often manifests as an incurable infection that spreads quickly. Amputation is the only course of action for these patients.
